Independence Day (History Of Indian Flag)

Each country is identified by its country flag which features many interesting attributes. Like that Indian flag also has some interesting attributes making it unique. The Indian flag is the pride of the country. The flag of India is in horizontal tricolor. There are many interesting features of Indian flag. The there are three colors in Indian flag saffron, white and green. The saffron color is on the top of the flag, white is in the middle and green is the bottom.

The need for an Indian flag came in the start of the 20th century when the independence movement was on its zenith. Sister Nivedita a disciple of Swami Vivekananda came up with the first national flag in 1904. The flag then named as Sister Nivedita's flag. The flag was in red shape. The flag had a white lotus and a vajrachinha means thunderbolt. But later on many changes when India was on the verge to receive independence.

Then came the tricolor flag which was unfurled in 1906.This flag was first unfurled in a protest rally in Bengal. The flag then came to be known as the Calcutta Flag.. The flag was interestingly unfurled in Germany. The flag that was first hoisted on August 7, 1906,at the Parsee Bagan Square in Calcutta. Called the 'Saptarishi Flag', this was hoisted in Stuttgartat the International Socialist Congress held on August 22, 1907. The flag had three colors orange, yellow in the middle and green at the bottom and in the yellow portion was written vande matram in devanagiri script. On 1907 another tri color was unfurled by Bhikaji Cama in 1907

A new Indian flag was adopted in 1917 by Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Annie Beasant. This flag featured four green and five horizontal strips. Associated with the names of Dr. Annie Besant and Lokmanya Tilak, this flag was hoisted at the Congress session in Calcutta during th'Home Rule Movement'. In the year 1921, a young man from Andhra presented this flag to Gandhiji for approval. Mahatama Gandhi insisted that the Indian flag should not represent any religion. Looking into this prospect many new Indian flags were designed.

The flag then featured white color on the top of the flag, green in the middle of the flag and red at the bottom. But the flag closely resembled the Irish flag. As questions were raised on the Indian flag, looking into this the Congress working committee came up with a Flag Committee of seven member in 1931.I This flag was suggested during the All India Congress Committee session in 1931. However, the Committee's suggestion was not approved. On August 6, 1931, the Indian National Congress formally adopted this flag, which was first hoisted on August 31st was only after Gandhiji's suggestion that the white strip and the charkha were added.

Our National Flag, which was born on July 22, 1947, with Nehruji's words, "Now I present to you not only the Resolution, but the Flag itself". This flag was first hoisted at the Council House on August 15, 1947.
The man who designed Tiranga versatile genius Lt. Shri Pingali Venkayya.

India's flag is a tricolor standard, with bands of saffron, white, and dark green. The saffron represents courage, sacrifice, patriotism, and renunciation. It is also the color of the Hindu people. The green stands for faith, fertility and the land;. The white is in the center, symbolizing the hope for unity and peace. In the center of the white band is a blue wheel with 24 spokes. The Chakra or the wheel in the middle of the flag caries a deep symbolism. In the wheel there are 24 spokes. The 24 spokes in the Asoka chakra represents the 24 hours. It is also called the wheel of law. The wheel shows that there is death in stagnation and life in movement. This is the Ashoka Chakra (or "Wheel of Law"). The Chakra represents the continuing progress of the nation and the importance of justice in life. It also appears on the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka " .
